Be there even when cancer strikes your friend!

It might be weird to read, but when cancer strikes both men and women have to face certain situations that they have never expected in their lives. This is the story of a man who was struck by the deadly form of skin cancer i.e. Melanoma. Melanoma affects the inner layers of skin and spreads swiftly. He shared few of the thoughts crossing his head at that point of time with his skin doctor when he started with his chemo. Many of his friends moved away from him as if they were never too closed to him. He had no lack of friends and he used to tell everything very fondly about his friendly.

The doctor was asked many questions but one was seriously something like searching! He asked if the same situation is faced by his female patients’ too. It made the doctor rethink and emphatically  he replied ‘Yes’. Cancer affects men and women  in similar ways. Challenge of coping with cancer illness, maintaining relationships and side effects of treatment are same for all. In a way, it  taught doctor of how to be a friend even when one of your close ones struck by cancer.

When he discovered the cancer diagnosis and mole check reports, he was totally shocked and felt like having someone to share whatever running in his mind at that time. He texted his friends and words spread like fire.  One of the  significant things that you can do for a cancer patient is be there physically and emotionally with your entire self. Supporting him with the initial discovery about the cancer is not at all helping. Though the person is safely out  of Melanoma now  and seeing him well, the friends tried to enter is life again but he didn’t allow. Show human communion and visible sympathy, it may even help them or encourage them to bear the same. Don’t tell them about the people who have already experienced the cancer and got rid of it after some years, instead listen to them on how they can have a control back in their lives.

Skin is very important part of our body. It act as a covering for our body, protecting it from heat, dirt and dust. It is very essential to take the best care of our skin. The most unfortunate disease of skin is cancer. The skin cancer is of three types, based on the site of origin; basal cell, squamous cell and melanoma cell skin cancer. Melanoma cell skin cancer is less common and always curable in early stages. Basal cell skin cancer is very common where cancer grows on surrounding tissue without a well defined manner. Squamous skin cancer is much like basal but spread is less as compared.

Cause of skin cancer

The abnormal growth of skin cells leads to tumour formation. This uncontrolled growth may be due to sunlight because of which genes controlling cell generation are altered and control is lost. Other reasons are exposure to ionising radiation, genetics, certain moles and age factor. So one must get Mole Check in order to prevent skin cancer from spreading.

Symptoms

Sore skin that does not heal is the foremost symbol of skin cancer. Certain bumps and moles with bleeding or appearing of scales on body are common symptoms of skin cancer.

Diagnosis

Visit a dermatologist. A skin biopsy is done to confirm the skin cancer. A portion of cancer cell is removed and studied under microscope to know the characteristics of cancer.

Treatment

Skin cancer treatment depends on type of cancer, size of tumour and its location. In surgical procedure, the area around tumour is made numb and the tumour is removed. This leads to scars on skin which can be cured by skin grafting. The second method is radiation therapy. The area is treated with high radiation field in 10-15 sessions, leading to tumour removal. The surgical scars will not be there but radiation scars can be. Furthermore, radiation therapy do not guarantee the complete removal of tumour.

Treatment for non-melanoma skin cancer

Squamous cell carcinomas, one of a kind of skin cancers if determined at initial stage, it can be cured. If removed promptly, it can be cured even more easily and reduces the risk of getting more serious forms of skin cancer such as Melanoma. It can become disfiguring if not taken care properly or not removed as it penetrates the inner tissues very fast. A very small percentage metastasize to distant tissues, lymph nodes and organs and become very serious or fatal. Any changes in the moles should always be seen by physician and that too immediately. For diagnosis, a tissue cell is examined under microscopic. Treatment is required if tumor cells are there in the tissue. There are many skin cancer clinic in Melbourne that make diagnosis of thousands of patients every year.

There are several ways to reduce or nullify the effects squamous cell carcinomas. The treatment in skin cancer clinic Melbourne depends upon the size, location, type and penetration depth of tumor. However, it may also depend on the general health and age of the patient. Treatment is performed on outpatients basis in a physician’s clinic. For the surgical process, local anesthetic is used. There is no such pain felt during the treatment. Although, a slight discomfort may be felt.

Mohs Microscopic surgery:

In Mohs Microscopic surgery, a curette or scalpel is used to remove visible tumor and a very thin layer of tissues around the same. This layer of skin is then sectioned, stained, frozen, mapped and checked under microscope. In some cases, the cancer is not removed properly. The next layer of the surrounding tissues is checked by following the same procedure that includes sectioning, making it frozen and mapping. The procedure is repeated for the surrounding part of the tissue. Generally, mohs surgery leaves healthy tissues on the body. It in turn reduces the recurrence or the development of other type of cancers. For any of the treatment of SCC, the cure rate is 94-99%. The surgery is normally used for the poorly demarcated, recurred and hard-to-treat cancer. Moreover, it is the treatment for the critical areas around nose, eyes, lips, ears, feet and hands. The wound is generally allowed to heal naturally after the removal.

How do moles grow actually?

Both moles and melanomas get their origination within the skin due to melanocytes i.e. melanoma producing cells. They are born in the inner layers of skin. For more than a decade, scientists considered that single mutation is responsible for abnormal melanocytes spread that in turn creates incidence of cancerous melanomas and benign moles. Regular mole check can reduce the risk of getting melanoma. You should have an immediate visit to mole check melbourne if you are getting the symptoms associated the ABCDE model. Mutation related with cell growth gene is called as BRAF. BRAF is always ‘on-state’ that promotes cell division regularly. When the cluster of melanoma producing cells reaches few millimeters say the size of a pencil eraser, cell proliferation stops typically.
“Why moles stop growing, despite all that BRAF activity, has been a long-standing question in the field" a researcher questioned while the conducting a study over the key genetic factors which makes mole turn into melanoma. More studies were carried out by researchers to have a correct answer for this question. They studied mole cells that were isolated from normal benign moles directly. The same were then compared with the melanocytes isolated from the normal skin. It was found that normal skin melanocytes had 140 times less p15 than the mole melanocytes.

Comparing the cells from melanoma patients those emerging out of previously benign moles, the researchers got to know that p15 level is much higher in the mole tissues and undetectable or very low in melanomas. It was concluded that p15 is really important to hold benign state regular moles.  Low level of p15 may promote transition to Melanoma. Although, routine mole check can serve as a savior.

Over activation of BRAF may drive mole growth causing mole cells to secrete a molecule called TGF-β. This molecule then signals again to the mole cells and makes p15. This serves to be the possible explanation behind why moles reach few millimeters diameter before they grow. TGF-β needs to build up to an extent and moles with lesser diameter do not lead to the production of TGF-β. Significance of p15 was neglected over decades as most of researchers used to consider that p16 is the main growth inhibitor. p15 and p16 work together as tumor suppressors to keep enough brakes in the cell proliferation.
